More about Differenciation and Scaffolding: activities

The other day we talked about the difference between Differenciation and Scaffoding, and now I am proposing some activities that we can bring to our classes when we want to apply these techniques.

So, regarding the Differenciation, we could create different learning stations for the students in our class. For example, if the topic for the lesson was "learning vocabulary about the airport", it would be great to create several stations which could include:

- Watching a video
- Creating artwork
- Reading an article
- Completing puzzles
- Writting

In this way, students can choose which station they want to visit according to their abilities so the classroom will engage with all students and their particular needs. This is just an example but I have also found some other 16 options that can be implemented in a lesson, dependind on factors such as age or the subject that will be taught.

On the other hand, we could implement Scaffolding by pre-teaching vocabulary before having students read a text. But this way of pre-teaching doesn't mean that we have to higlight dozen words from some chapter and having students look the definitions up and write them on their notebooks, but introducing the words to kids in photos or in context with things they know and are interested in. We could use analogies and metaphors and invite students to create a symbol or drawing for each word. We will give time for discussion of the words (in small groups and then the whole class). Then, with the dozen or so words front-loaded, students are ready, with the teacher as their guide, to tackle that challenging text.

I find these strategies very useful and I hope I'll be able to use them in the future with my students and I hope you do too!
